LIBERIA WINS A NOBEL PRIZE

The Nobel Peace Prize 2011 was awarded jointly to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkol Karman "fortheir non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work".

(CNN) -- Women's rights took center stage December 10th at the Nobel ceremonies as three women recognized for their struggles against the backdrops of the Arab Spring and democratic progress in Africa accepted this year's peace prize.
Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and Leymah Gbowee, a social worker and peace campaigner from the same country, shared the prize with Tawakkul Karman, an activist and journalist who this year played a key opposition role in Yemen.
The three were chosen for their non-violent struggle against injustice, sexual violence and repression.
"Ever since the Norwegian Nobel Committee made this year's decision known, the people of Norway have looked forward to seeing you on this stage," said Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
All three women dedicated their remarks to women struggling for equal rights around the world.

ELECTIONS: UNITY PARTY STORMS MONROVIA

Saturday, September 17, 2011 may well be recorded in history as the day Monrovia went crazy as "hurricane Ellen" swept across the city and it's environs, sending thousands of Unity Party supporters and sympathizers to the under-capacity Antoinette Tubman Stadium to witness the formal of campaign for the re-election of incumbent President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
The 50,000 crowd of supporters and sympathizers, who overwhelmed the 20,000 capacity ATS prevented the more than 100,000 other supporters outside from entering the stadium.
News that the stadium and its immediate environs were already overwhelmed by about 20,000 supporters and sympathizers of the UP kept thousands more pro-Ellen crowd at Monrovia's suburbs, intersections and entertainment centers.
Before the first Partisans, President Sirleaf and other senior executives of the party took the stage, a list of special campaign songs were lively played, blaring the entire stadium as partisans danced their feet out.
The President, who arrived at the ATS in a great amazement, beaming with smiles, assured her partisans of landslide victory come October 11, 2011. "Oppositions will get breaking heart, because we're going to beat them flat on the ground," said the rather overly confident UP Standard Bearer, amidst thunderous applauds from the crowd.

SPORTS: Liberia Marathon Winners

The BHP Billiton Liberia Marathon Winners  Press Release

Running 26.2 miles in the wettest capital in the world is ‘no small thing’ as Liberians would say. But close to a thousand people turned out to run in Liberia’s FIRST ever marathon event – the 10km race, the Amputee race, the Wheelchair race and the Marathon race on Sunday 28th August.

Ethiopian runner, Mehari Gebre, who flew into Liberia to take part in the country’s first ever accredited marathon race took the gold. But it was 16 year old Lucy Massaquoi, a Liberian, who won the women’s marathon race. Speaking before the event she said, ‘I am not scared. I encourage more women to run with me.’

Liberian runner Bill Rogers, who is currently in the US on an athletics scholarship, won the top prize in the men’s 10km race. When asked why he flew all the way home to take part he said, ‘ I just wanted to make history for the Liberian people.’ He added, ‘I just wanted to make them proud of Liberia!’

Speaking live at the closing ceremony at SKD stadium, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who ran part of the 10km race herself said, ‘This is another first for Liberia.’ Madam Sirleaf is the Patron of Sport and knows all too well how important sport is for the development of the country. As she stood on stage in front of the cheering crowds at the national stadium, she jokingly made a comment about the spectacular Liberian rain the runners had to contend with.

BHP Billiton were the title sponsors of this year’s event. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Jeffery Zweig, who also ran alongside the President said, I congratulate and thank you for showing the world some of the best that this country has to offer: patriotism, athletic excellence, and true sportsmanship.’

BUSINESS: CSOP SUMMER YOUTH CAMP

Wednesday August 17, 23 children and 12 counselors embarked upon a 3 day adventure to Camp Promise; a christian youth r camp sponsored by the Cachelle School of Promise (CSOP). The goal was to help young campers grow into healthy, tolerant, and self-confident individuals, capable of living and working with others, in a community setting, while creating lasting relationships with their peers. Camp Promise provided an environment that encouraged children to learn and develop these skills.
The children were divided into 5 groups and assigned a Godly Characteristic (love, joy, peace, respect…etc). Each group of campers researched the assigned Characteristic and presented it in the form of skits, songs, and/or posters and had the opportunity to use other arts and crafts to convey what they had learned. They had a fun filled evening on Thursday night highlighted by a talent show showcasing both their talents and those of their counselors.

As the campers learned about other Characteristics, they were encouraged to contrast these with their own life practices. Camp Promise helped them strengthen their faith and their understanding of the gifts of the Holy spirit.

On Sunday, June 26th Barefoot Safari, Liberia's premier tour and logistics operator, hosted their second "Lazy Raft Race" on the St. Paul river. Last November's event had 32 lazy rafters drifting down the St. Paul on inflatable beds for a lazy day of drinking, laughing and lounging. This year, with their newly built barge and additional inner tubes, Barefoot Safari carried 76 participants down the river from Clay Ashmound to the Barefoot Club House, just past the old Anchor Club. Music blasted from the party barge, as partipants danced and floated all day long. The event was sponsored by Cellcom, Club Beer, Stop and Shop Super Market, Trust Enterprise, and Villa Hotel. Barefoot Safari's aim is to promote the positive image of Liberia by sharing nationally and internationally the beautiful wildlife and wilderness that Liberia offers. To find out more information on Barefoot Safari and to stay updated with their next events check out their website at www.barefootsafari.com and find them on Facebook.

FASHION DESIGNER GOES BACK TO SCHOOL FOR A GOOD REASON.

Korto Momolu, international fashion designer, returned home after 23 years to help launched Amani Liberia Project.  During her stay, she visited Cachelle School of Promise (CSOP), an orphan school founded in 2009 for children of the Mother Wleh Orphanage.

Korto was moved and overcome by emotions.  Her eyes filled with tears as she toured the orphanage; especially the living quarters for the kids.  "We take so many things for granted...I'm making a change in my life." Momolu stated.  "Maybe God brought me home at this time; during this moment for something maybe greater."  Korto pledge to lend her support to the school in anyway she can.

Shoana Cachelle Clarke, proprietor of CSOP shared a moving story about a young boy, who was born with special needs, and unfortunately died 2 weeks prior.  Additionally, the students at the school welcomed Ms. Momolu with a program, which included an opening prayer, skit, songs of praises, and most of all the smiles and promise of HOPE.
